I recently flew over to the UK to visit my family. Even though I bought an eye catching stripey suit case I wanted something unique on it (just in case someone had a matching suitcase!!)
So I made a luggage tag...Here is how :) Great way to use those smaller pieces of fabric in your stash.
You will need:
2 pieces top fabric 4" x 7", (I used cotton)
2 pieces heavy weight stabiliser 4" x 7",
1 length of fabric for the loop 2" x 14"
Enough iron on interfacing to interface top fabric and loop pieces (I used medium weight)
2 pieces of sew in heavy weight stabiliser
Piece of clear vinyl about size of tag....(I didn't have any new clear vinyl fabric so recycled some from packaging I had around)
To Make:
1) First attach iron on interfacing to wrong side of fabric pieces.(fig 1)
2) Take the matching sized pieces of interfaced fabric. Lay each one with the wrongside against the pieces of sew-in heavy weight stabiliser (fig 2). You can tack or pin them in place if you like. It will save you having to hold it all in place in stage 4. So now you should have two pieces of interfaced fabric backed with stabiliser.
3) Make loop. (fig 3) Attach interfacing to the length of fabric that will form the loop. Fold the fabric in half length ways and press with iron. This will give you a centre fold. Then fold each outside edge in to meet the centre line. Press in place. Fold again so that the raw edges are hidden inside. Top stitch down each side. (fig 4) Attach strap to one side of your fabric pieces at the top in the centre. (fig 5)

4) Take the fabric piece you have attached the loop to and place with right sides together to other matching size piece of fabric, trapping the loop inside. Sew around the edge (about 1/2" in) leaving an opening of about 2" at the base. (fig 6)

5) Cut away triangles on each corner about 1/8" away from stitching. Then snip away two more triangles each side of the triangle you have just snipped from the seam allowance. (fig 6) This will take away any unneeded bulk on the corners
6) Once sewn carefully turn it the right way out. This will take patience but once it's at least half way turned the rest should follow! Using a blunt ended tool (like a big knitting needle or end of pen) gently poke the corners out. (fig 7) I say gently as you really don't want to break the corner stitching! But if you do, just turn it back the other way and stitch it again ;)
7) Tuck in the edges of the opening and press with iron. Top stitch around the whole tag (about 1/8" from outside edge). You may find it easier to hand sew the opening shut first before top stitching.
8) Cut the vinyl bigger than you need. Place on tag with the edge that will form the top opening about 2 inches down from the top. Now here is a great trick for attaching vinyl....before sewing in place lay over a piece of tissue paper. Stitch through the tissue paper to attach three sides of the vinyl leaving the top open so you can insert a card with your details. My stitching line is about 1/8" in from the top stitching. Once sewn, tear away the tissue paper. Then trim away any excess vinyl. (fig 8)
Now proudly attach your unique luggage tag to your baggage :)
